The Black Community Should Be Ashamed For Abandoning Bill Cosby

*You used to watch him on television religiously.

He was more than the patriarch of the fictional Huxtable Family, he was the archetype for all black fathers to mimic.

He eventually became America’s favorite dad, but Bill Cosby started as your childhood fantasy.

He was a 30-minute escape from the fatherless home from which many of you came.

He was your teacher, your motivator, your source of love and encouragement, your support system, your disciplinarian, your friend and confidant, and most importantly, he was the father you always wanted, but never had.

For more than a year, the embattled comedian has been embroiled in an ongoing, tabloid-fueled melodrama filled with a ton of he-said-she-said rhetoric and propaganda.

His alleged victims have emerged from different decades of his past to participate in what seems to be a huge money grab.

There’s no conclusive evidence to corroborate the multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Cosby—many of which seem far-fetched to say the least—but it hasn’t stopped the media from obliterating Cosby’s legacy and character, while portraying him (prematurely) as both a liar and habitual predator.

As a result, his award-winning show has virtually disappeared from cable television, his many honorary college degrees have been revoked, murals and statues depicting his image have been demolished, his playful Jello commercials have been flushed down the toilet, and there’s even speculation that his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will eventually be removed.

In only 12 months, Cosby has regressed from being America’s favorite dad to America’s favorite punching bag, and what’s worse, it appears that his former fanbase is turning a blind eye to what’s going on (or making insensitive jokes about it).

Meanwhile, protests, demonstrations and digital campaigns are being launched ad nauseam to support the likes of Michael Brown and Freddy Grey, two boneheads that paid the ultimate price for disobeying police and violating the laws of their respective hometowns.

If Black Lives Matter, then it should include the life of a man who has dedicated more than 50 years to ensure the prosperity and longevity of African American people.

As Facebook and Twitter continue to be flooded with hashtags against police brutality, a 78-year-old cultural icon is being brutalized mercilessly by the media and his detractors, many of whom, surprisingly, are black.

After the Michael Brown shooting in 2014, numerous support groups and civil-rights organizations joined forces and demanded justice for the slain teenager.

This happened despite the released footage of Brown robbing a convenience store and strong-arming the clerk on duty.

It happened despite reports of him blatantly disobeying officer Darren Wilson’s orders, and then engaging him in physical combat.

And when the charges against Officer Wilson were dropped—due to an undeniable amount of conclusive evidence in his favor—it triggered national outage and resulted in the riotous destruction of Ferguson, Missouri, where the incident transpired.

Similar incidents, generally involving lawbreakers and juvenile delinquents, have sparked countless protests across the country.

Contrarily, the man we all grew up admiring is taking a pounding from the media and the best African Americans have done to defend Bill Cosby, thus far, is post halfhearted one-liners on Facebook and silly memes on Twitter.

Isn’t he worth more than a brief mention on social media?

Black people, you raise hell every time CNN riles you up (for ratings) with sensationalized reports of police misconduct against minorities.

However, if someone were to listen for black voices in defense of Cosby, he would likely hear the disenchanting sound of critics chirping.

Why aren’t we protesting the slander and character assassination of a man who has donated millions to preserve and create black institutions of learning?

Why aren’t we demanding a court-ordered investigation into the personal history of each alleged Cosby assault victim (90 percent of whom are white).

Why aren’t we doing everything in our power to help Cosby overcome the odds stacked against him?

Oh that’s right, I forgot - many of you have been holding a grudge against this man for years because he encouraged your foolish children to pull up their trousers in public.

He challenged you to be better parents (a request that’s clearly fallen on deaf ears).

He challenged the black community to raise its level of productivity and sophistication (another request that hasn’t materialized).

In your eyes, Cosby is a self-righteous Uncle Tom and therefore unworthy of your allegiance.

He continues to dwell in exile, while the doors of black support swing open perpetually to those who can barely spell Cosby, let alone match his accomplishments.

One day soon, the media will announce Bill Cosby’s death. His demise, however, won’t come from natural causes, it will be the result of a broken heart.

No body's saying how he did it was right but he don't deserve the way we black folks are treating him!!! White men beat and rape black women for years. So what happen to them. Black folks need to get off our high horses!!!!!

    9. I still maintain the opinion that the Hannibal Buress incidental mike drop on Cosby was an coordinated plant meant to look coincidental because A) This scandal conveniently broke less than 2 weeks before his $100 million dollar Netflix deal launched & at the tail end of multi-year negotiations with NBC for a new show to launch in the Spring not to mention potential buy in rights at NBC valued in the 100s of millions. Something no other Black man has ever accomplished. B) If these accusations are true now then they were previously true so how did 30 women (most of them White) all decide to remain silent for decades. I find that Questionable! C) The last time Cosby embarked on a high powered 9-figure deal to acquire NBC to launch the Black NBA some 19 yr Russian hit man killed his son Ennis in cold blood forcing Cosby into early retirement. D) Jeff Zucker/Head of CNN, former V.P. of NBC Entertainment played an integral role in breaking & promoting the Cosby scandal & may have had an axe to grind with Cosby from his time at NBC. For CNN was on a mission, they searched diligently for more women, they invested millions into original programming, which they ran on repeat 24/7 for months, which was totally out of context when compared to other networks) CNN also paid these women for their interviews, provided them with free travel, clothing, make overs not to mention free legal representation, (Gloria Allred), and the prosecutor and 1st judge in this matter have social ties to Jeff Zucker. That's just too damn cozy for journalistic impartiality to be remotely possible. E) Its my understanding that many of these women saw Mr. Cosby over many months, sometimes years at a time, flying to meet him all over the country. So at the end of the day, I cannot comment on what happens between 2 adults, & I have absolutely no opinion on whether or not these women are being truthful. But as a Gentleman I'm inclined to believe most women who make rape accusations. That being said, I do find it rather difficult to believe that any Black man of any social standing in America could have ever gotten away with raping even one White woman during the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s. But a famous Black Man getting away with raping 25 White women in America over the same time period, seems to defy common sense!

    11. Thank you both, Marshall and Leander. This blog would have been better if it had included the facts presented by you, Marshall, instead of harping on so called thuggish "boneheads". Incidentally, our writer has so much to say about the "boneheads" but has NOTHING to say about the OTHER VICTIMS of police brutality that DO NOT fit his "boneheaded, thuggish, and unharmious stereotype. However, I do agree with him on the Cosby case, and the black communities abandonment. And I totally agree with you, Leander on the so called Hannibal Buress mic-drop. But for him, what goes around comes around. Someone soon will do a "Mic drop" on him. And when happens the actual skeletons in his closest will emerge. Here is hoping that when it does, it will occur by the hand of some other young, up and coming stand up comic and it will happen in Buress' own hometown, too.

    12. The Cosby scandal, significantly, is the first instance, and certainly won't be the last, of the media's turning directly to Social Media for cues on how to play a story. Social media is a sewer of stupid minds. That's why I don't look at replies to my social media posts. Jeer away, I seriously do not care. The media will tell you that, if I dare question a rape allegation, I am "The Reason Women Get Raped". They'll tell you that, if a woman says she's been raped, and lies and lies and lies to the police about everything else, that means she's been raped: compulsive lying is an aftereffect of rape - or so the jury was told at Cosby's trial. They'll tell you that Cosby had more power than Dracula over not only his victims, but literally everyone in his midst, for over four decades. That's entertainment, for a crowd whose Reasoning Standards are identical to those that got Sarah Goode burnt at the stake in 1692, because of many accusations with "eerily similar" details.

Cosby's trial is now a matter of public record, and history confirms that the day will come when he is seen as the victim of a media whose standards continue to sink, and sink, and sink, just because the masses love that. His historical stature is secure. We live in a madhouse, and mad people are reading these words. But when our madness goes on record, as it has in Cosby's case, it's scrutinized for decades, even centuries, to come, and our madness sickens the same world that nurtured it. Our stupid hate makes us love the men and women who endure it, and Cosby continues to do so with grace and even humor. Our media does not know, and neither do you or I, that he ever raped anyone.

Pill Cosby is a self admitted serial cheater on a Black Queen with several Black AND white women. He admitted to drugging women to having sex with them. His moral compass gives me NO reason to believe that 60 women over a 50 year period are lying on him. Wrong is wrong, he will get no Black sympathy from me. 5. I have to say as someone who was sexually assaulted I found the timing of this distraction suspect and the woman who started it even more suspect. At the time when this was announced there were two major BLACKLIVESMATTER protests about to happen on the East and West Coast because of the murder of Mike Brown who was murdered with his hands up and empty. And for the Gardner family whose husband was murdered as a result of an illegal chokehold. All of those women who appeared on the cover of the New Yorker did not have a rape case. When you have been sexually assaulted in the real world you do not continue to call, go on road trips or on vacations to other countries for a get away, call them 53 times afterward, go to their job or buy them gifts. Whoever the specialists who said this shit is normal behavior needs to have her license revoked. No where will you find women or men who have gone through a sexual assault have that kind of relationship with their rapist. And Constand got money and signed an agreement, wtf was she even doing here at a trial in Pa. anyway? The reason the jury could not come to an agreement was because they saw through the bullshit, this was about money and the fact that this Black man slept with all those white women and no one killed him, skinned him alive and took his organs. Bill O' Reilly has been sexually assaulting and harassing women, Dugger sexually assaulted his sisters in addition to other girls and the media is so quiet its deafening. The DA says he is going to go at again, who is going to pay for it?

    1. I'm sorry to hear you were a victim, but there is an enormous difference between you and these women in the Cosby case. You mentioned they wouldn't do this and that if they were victims. I have to disagree. When dealing with an extremely wealthy and connected person like Bill Cosby or any celebrity or wealthy person, people will naturally act different. Some out of fear if they come forward, some out of the chance to cash in on what happened, some might use this as a chance to get exposure that could be a stepping stone to bigger things, some might be to traumatized to relive the experience, and so on. Everyone is different so it's too difficult to say they are lying because of how they are acting today. Race is elimitated from the factor when a prominent celebrity or someone extremely wealthy is involved. Look at the OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson, Donte Stallworth, etc...cases. I hope Cosby didn't do what he is being accused of. If he is, then he deserves to be prosecuted. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter if your white, black, yellow, purple, green, or whatever, if you commit a crime like this then you should have to pay the price.

    1. You are pay attention to the wrong media. Dr. Cosby admitted giving one prescription drug called a quaalude to a lover around 1975. It was a muscle relaxant that was proscribed to Cosby for his back pain. People often used quaaludes as a recreational drug when they had sex. It increased the pleasure. There were over a million proscriptions of quaaludes written in 1975. Tens of millions of people used them. The woman who he gave it to admitted that he told her what it was before he gave it to her and she took it. That is not drugging a person. That is basically the same as sharing a drink or a joint before sex. Although thousands of people did it every day in California in 1975, not one person was arrested for it. In 1980, the drug was banned. It was apparently found to be quite addicting and some people overdosed on it.

  10. I am against anyone being raped...however this do seem like a money hunt! Women of all walks of life came out, only after attorney Allred conjured up women, to prove her case. These women had opportune times, years ago to make their stories believable. Now,they come off as a lot of scorned women who had a relationship with a married man, since things didn't go as they planned, they now want whats owed to them...money! Then the model, Janice Dickinson, story really made me speechless, because who would take a pic after being raped! We know camera phones were not invented yet, so that leaves sn instant camera, which is hella loud and 35km that had a bright flash, yet the pic she had has him in bathrobe, drinking a beverage, looking in camera direction...hmmmm...That makes no sense to me...and then there was supposed to be an incident at the Playboy mansion...Souldn't Hugh Heifner be an accessory since it was his quarters? Then the Constand chicken was not stupid, who accepts pulls from anyone other than what your family doctor or hospital prescribes. So yes, there's a lot of holes in all these stories...I know firsthand, that in a civil suit, you are (let's just say "advised") to have the same story as all the others. Also, I think it would've been more fair to do this about25 yrs ago, when he had more fight left...Oh, u truly believe this drama is going to kill that poor old man!!! The fact that Cosby by his own admission was a habitual cheater on his wife was strike one, that he admitted giving women drugs was strike two. This article betrays Black men who are faithful to their wives and girlfriends and the single Black men who are able engage in consensual sexual encounters with the opposite sex without the use of conscious altering drugs.

Yeah, we're more upset about poor, people being killed by cops; being deprived of their civil rights than we are about a multimillionaire celebrity. One things is an existential threat to us all. The other is not.

As to why Cosy drugged women for sex, it was because he likes having sex with unconscious, helpless women. He's sick.

As far as court ordered investigations of the women who've accused him, has this idiot ever heard of the 4th Amendment? That's not the way the system works. Cosby certainly could do that, as well as sue each individual for slander and defamation. He hasn't done that either.

  20. As a black man and fan of Cosby's professional work, I remain deeply saddened, but not ashamed. You have allowed your sentimentality for a popular and accomplished cultural icon to delude your proper sensibilities. Bill is a major public figure, an important and powerful man, regardless of race, who liked to have it all, even if it meant running rough shod over many women's most intimate rights. Drugging (or even attempting to drug) and then molesting (or even attempting to molest) many of the women leveling charges against Cosby, was a bridge too far. Even for a "player," there is NO street cred in this. I will always appreciate and respect Bill's comedic and cultural accomplishments, but his severe character defect in regards to his mistreatment of women, impressed a deep and severe stain on his reputation. Character counts, and I remain deeply saddened, but not ashamed.

  25. Ok. I love a Different World...The Cosby Show...but I don't have to support Bill Cosby to hate his behavior...and further more, I am not required to support him, R. Kelly or any other black man with a sexual deviancy that embraces white supremacy at this level. I don't believe that he raped all of these white women...but lets face it, black men make it HELLA easy for white women looking for opportuinities to set them up....even if he did not rape them, he fucked around on his wife BIG time, and karma is a bitch, probably a white bitch looking for a hand out.....Bill Cosby also used his voice to denounce a lot of ghetto shit that he saw in our community...but ..JUDGE LEST YE NOT BE JUDGED...he was talking about hip hop...clothing choices, baby mama shit....and all the while was committing adultery on his wife....I can separate his intentions from his actions...I am glad that he put out the Cosby Show and Different World....I just wish that he would have listened to his own rhetoric.

  26. am devastated too that black people eventually have literally deserted him as a result of not proven sexual allegation by white women

  27. Really! apparently he didn't have a problem abandoning his wife for others when he felt like it. He admitted that himself.

  28. First of all we should get some facts straight. This man has been the constant target of extortion for years. Begining with the attempted kidnapping and murder of his only son. Apparently for ramson. Someone claiming to be his daughter and was proven not to be thru DNA went to jail for trying to extort 40 million from him. Cosby like many rich men have always been a target for greedy ambitious people. Why is this so different. Why hasn't woody Allen and Roman Polanski who is still on the lam for raping a 13 year after being convicted still wins awards and woody Allen married his long time girlfriend adopted daughter. He still wins awards. No one is calling for their heads in a plate. But Cosby who has not been convicted of a dam thing is being ter and feathered. And yes. Shame on black America and shame on all those quiet black whom owe their very careers to this man for abandoning him. Like a bunch of scare run away slaves.

  29. I won't betray and disregard the mistreatment of my gender trying to prove loyalty to my race. This isn't about race as much as it is about sex crimes against women and the disregard of female voices when they report sexual assualt.

If race is involved, it's because of Bill Cosby's own internalized issues with race which led to an obvious preference for humiliating and violating white women more than black women - so naturally white women have more complaints.

But Bill Cosby ruined his own legacy, betrayed his own family and abandoned his own people the moment he decided it would be fun to put quaaludes in drinks for free access to someone's body.
The black community is not to blame for his troubles. 60+ instances of sexual misconduct is.
    AND...
This mistrial is not vindication or proof of his innocence.

  30. I'm willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt but Cosby admitted to getting a prescription for Quaaludes not for himself but for the express purpose of drugging women for sex. He was mixing drugs and alcohol, giving them to unsuspecting women and could have killed someone. A woman could have died from a drug reaction or overdose. Cosby didn't. care what he had to do to get into a woman's panties.

    1. Cosby's purchasing Quaaludes to give to girls who wanted them is only one degree less damning than it would be if we knew that he bought weed for them - weed being the MOST POPULAR recreational drug of the day, while Quaaludes were the SECOND MOST POPULAR. Also, a serial rapist racking up hundreds of victims by knocking them out with drugs SHOULD have wound up with at least a few dead bodies on his hands, but Cosby, we're to believe, knew just how much of God-knows-what to give each victim. I find it difficult to reconcile the FIRST image the media handed me of COSBY-THE-MONSTER, a man who wanted sex with inert, unconscious bodies, with the SECOND image, of a guy who liked his sex with girls on Quaaludes - very responsive, even loud, and not at all inert. What's even harder to reconcile is that any fool would buy into this crap. But all it takes is LOTS of fools, and a media all too eager to deceive them. Keep believing what the media tells you EVERYONE BELIEVES, but God help anyone in your midst, Ann - you are Mob Mentality Incarnate.

  31. I don't know how young I was when I learned that, should my body ever catch fire, I should look around for a rug, a blanket, or some drapery, wrap myself up in that and smother the fire out. I'm glad I have that information in my head - I feel everyone should have that information, and we should get it when we're young. That said, if I ever find myself on fire, I don't know that I'll look for a rug. I might panic and burn to a crisp. Should I be blamed for that?

Should I be blamed that, one night in my youth, when I would have done well to CALL FOR HELP, because I had been sexually assaulted, I stayed alone in a shower just wanting to blank out my mind and make the bad stuff go away? You can blame me if you want, but I don't blame myself, nor will I blame any victim who doesn't report having been sexually assaulted. My anger goes elsewhere today. I'm angry at a media with zero regard for Sexual Assault Prevention, and angry at a mob of bitches who, assaulted or not, have nothing constructive to sell the public - only a destructive intent to bury all mention of POLICE REPORTS and RAPE KITS, because those subjects hurt their credibility in an orchestrated attack on Bill Cosby.

It rates with me that, when I was in my teens and had been sexually assaulted, the message CALL FOR HELP wasn't in my head at all. It's now 2017, and the next kid like me who gets f'd up the b by a predator, will not have that information in his head. Has there been anything in the campaign against Cosby that works toward Rape Prevention? There is nothing. The message that BILL COSBY IS A MONSTER is sick entertainment for the dumbest of the dumb. There are monsters everywhere. What do we do to protect our kids from them? You DON'T take your cues from a media that can't be bothered to fact-check, plays to the Lowest Common Denominator, and looks for Gut Reaction Only. Gut Reaction told me the Menendez brothers were sexually assaulted. Were they? You don't reason with your gut unless you're a fool. You don't buy into media bias unless you're a fool.

What we've seen in the courtroom is the Reality that stories (even a slew of them) unsubstantiated by POLICE REPORTS and RAPE KITS, are insufficient even for a jury pressed to satisfy an overheated public - not when the jury members hold to Reasoning Standards, not even when you have "experts" testifying that sexual assault victims can't be expected to tell the truth, so it's okay that Constand lied and lied and lied to the police, until the police confronted her with evidence that, no, she didn't break contact with Cosby after the alleged assault, and in fact their relationship continued for some time. Social media morons accept that, if a woman says she's been raped, she's telling the truth, no matter how many holes there may be in her story. What's more, if I dare question a rape allegation, I am "The Reason Women Get Raped". This is the same crowd that burnt Sarah Goode at the stake, because of many accusations with "eerily similar" details. That's why I don't bother replying to responses to my social media posts. Social media is a sewer of stupid minds.

  32. In a deposition, Cosby admits that he used drugs to have sex with women. To add, for years he tried not to have that deposition released on television but...now we know he's a rapist!

  33. No one has to be pro anything. I just don't understand how can they bring a sexual assault charge which was over 10 years ago. Criminal charges have a statue of limitations because evidence becomes stale, memories fade, no one has to worry about someone lying on them and 30 years ago w/some felony that can't be proven. e. The only charge which does not have a statute of limitations is murder. All of a sudden everyone who were so "scared" decide to tell their story. What changed now from back then? you still told your story, nothing happened to you. When he was kicking out those dollars she/they didn't have a problem. Ain't nobody scare of wtf Bill can do. He's dang there blind. He is not getting convicted, they will be wasting their time trying him again. The judge ruled none of his "victims" can testify. Reason probably wtf they had to say would not be worthy hearing. He didn't put on a defense and they jury still had issues w/her testimony. If they were "smart" they should have made him their personal piggy bank. Lying saying he would be able to affect their ability, in that industry, to ensure they would not be able to work in the industry. Well you would rather get raped and drugged in still not recognized in the industry. Next time, if you see someone slipping something in your drink, tell someone, bring something to put some of the drink in so it can be tested. To make it more believable talk about the drink sand/or record the conversation so 30 years later you have nothing but 30 people never knew. Or do a Monica lewinsky and keep the semen on your clothes then go to the emergency room and ask them to give you a rape test because you think someone slipped something in your drunk. Then let them drug test your azz and find all these high levels of other drugs in your system that could not have slipped in your drink. Explain those results. Go sit down somewhere or crawl under that rock u came from under!! That basketball couch looks like she is gay anyone. So she should have her girlfriend/wife testify about the 3 some he had w/you and your girlfriend /wife!!

  34. Per a friend of mine regarding your "blog" "What?? This is laughable! Wasn't it Bill Cosby that went around lecturing Black folk about personal responsibility? So he gets accused of sex crimes by way of drugging 60 woman and now Black folk just should have marches for him? Really? This matter has yet to be resolved so we as Black people are just saying Bill has to be personally responsible for his issues!! Hey it's what he chastised The Black community on right? So what Mr. Cosby needs to do is practice what he preached!! To say Black people should be ashamed about this matter is utterly ridiculous!! No if this is true Mr. Cosby should be ashamed of himself!! If it's proven false you can bet Black folk will have that parade the blogger seeks for Mr. Cosby!"
